第13章 問道宿命
Queries on Gaining the Wisdom of Past Lives

沙門問佛。以何因緣得知宿命。會其至道。
A monk asked the Buddha: "Under what conditions is it possible to come to the knowledge of the past and to understand the most supreme Way?"

佛言。淨心守志。可會至道。
The Buddha said: "Those who are pure in heart and single in purpose are able to understand the most supreme Way.

譬如磨鏡。垢去明存。斷欲無求。當得宿命
It is like polishing a mirror, which becomes bright when the dust is removed.
Remove your passions, and have no hankering, and the past will be revealed unto you."

In Buddhism there are six types of supernatural power, namely heavenly vision, heavenly ear, mind reading, supernatural wisdom of past lives, unimpeded bodily function, and complete extinction of afflictions. Apart from complete extinction of afflictions, the other five can also be demonstrated by heretics, ghosts and heavenly beings. What is complete extinc

tion of afflictions then? It is a status at which one has acquired pure wisdom to eliminate all afflictions and thus can quit cyclic rebirth. Such supernatural power is exclusive to Buddhism.
佛教讲的神通一共有六种，包括天眼通、天耳通、他心通、宿命通、神足通、漏尽通。除了漏尽通外，其它五种神通是外道或鬼神都可以有的。那什么是漏尽通？它就是证得无漏的智慧，烦恼尽除，到达了脱生死的境界，所以这是佛教独有的。

As for the supernatural wisdom of past lives, it is a power to know the past lives of oneself and even others. The coverage of time, territory, and realm of such power may vary according to one’s degree of attainment. For example, arhats can find out at most the past lives over eight eons whereas the Buddhas can know all matters over unlimited number of eons. Also, a

past lives of other sentient beings belonging to the same realm or inferior realms from three thousand worlds, but they cannot know the past of the Buddhas or Bodhisattvas.
至于宿命通, 这是指能知道自己乃至别人过去生所做过之事的能力。在修行上证量不同，所能了知的时间、地域、界别范围亦会有所不同。例如阿罗汉最多可以了知八万劫前的事，而佛却能了知无量劫前的事。阿罗汉最多可知三千国土中自地及下界众生之宿命，却不能了知佛菩萨的事。

Apart from cultivation, supernatural power can be acquired as the result of causation. For example, those who are reborn in the path of devas, hungry ghosts, or reborn in the Western Pureland will have inborn supernatural power. In addition, some ordinary people may become contracted with supernatural power because of demonic possession. When the supernatural being leaves the host, the power will be lost. Lastly, supernatural power can be acquired through a certain object or ritual, e.g, fortune telling. Therefore supernatural power is not exclusive to Buddhism, and the Buddha basically did not allow the disciples to demonstrate it. (to be cont’d)
神通除了可以通过修行获得外，也可以因为果报而获得，例如投生天道、饿鬼道、乃至往生西方极乐的众生都会有神通。另外，有些普通人会因为鬼神附体而获得神通，当鬼神离去后，神通就会消失，更有利用外物或一些方法获得神通的，例如算命。可见神通并不是佛教的专利，而佛陀一般也不允许弟子示现神通。（待续）
