2009年6月18日,斯里兰卡总统拉贾帕克萨将Jetawana 佛塔交给佛教社区用作宗教活动。他在对Jetawana 塔修复工作耗时28年才完成表示了关注后，指示文化部长和中央文化基金官员要采取措施，尽量在2010年完成对Abayagiri佛塔的修复工作。

Conservation work of the Stupa started in 1983 and stopped within a short period. The present ongoing conservation project was initiated in 1997.
